As part of ongoing drought assessment mission across Southwest State, we have conducted a targeted visit to Ceel Adow in the Bay Region to evaluate the current situation facing livestock keepers and smallholder farmers. The assessment aimed to gather updated field-level information and engage with affected households to understand their most urgent needs.
During the visit, the team met with pastoralist families caring for goats, camels, and cattle, many of whom reported severe drought-related challenges. Livestock were found to be increasingly weak due to inadequate feed and long-distance movement in search of grazing areas. Community members also highlighted a rise in animal diseases, including respiratory infections and common cold symptoms, which are further reducing livestock productivity and increasing mortality risks.
A critical concern raised by residents of Ceel Adow was the continued shortage of fodder, natural grass, and water, which is putting immense pressure on both livestock and household livelihoods. The ongoing drought has resulted in drastically reduced milk production, limiting both nutritional intake and income sources for pastoral families.
Farmers in the area also reported that insufficient rainfall and delayed seasonal rains have caused most planted seeds to dry out before germination. This has led to widespread crop failure and heightened food insecurity, mirroring the challenges faced across other drought-affected rural areas of Southwest State.
SAARO field team briefed the community on potential support pathways and reaffirmed its commitment to continued field monitoring, coordination with partners, and advocacy for emergency fodder distribution, veterinary services, and livelihood support programs. The situation in Ceel Adow further highlights the urgent need for coordinated drought response interventions across the region.
