  • Livestock Health Check assessment

As part of saaro ongoing assessment field mission across Southwest State, we have conducted a livestock health inspection in one of the rural areas severely affected by recurrent drought. During the visit, the team observed goats and sheep suffering from various health challenges, including heavy tick infestation, physical weakness, and early signs of disease.

Tick infestation was found to be widespread, causing significant irritation, weight loss, and increasing the risk of infections among the animals. These conditions, combined with the severe shortage of fodder, natural grass, and clean water, have led to low milk production and a noticeable decline in livestock body condition. As a result, animals are being sold at very low market prices, further deepening the economic vulnerability of pastoral households.

SAARO remains fully committed to supporting affected communities and is preparing urgent interventions, including livestock treatment campaigns, mobile veterinary outreach services, emergency fodder distribution, and community awareness activities on animal welfare and sustainable livestock care.
