1. About SAARO
The Somali Animal Advocacy and Rights Organization (SAARO) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established on 15 December 2017 in Baidoa, Southwest State of Somalia. It was founded by a coalition of Somali professionals, veterinarians, environmentalists, and community leaders who share a deep concern for animal welfare, ethical livestock management, and sustainable agricultural development.
For decades, animals have played a central role in Somali livelihoods — serving as a source of income, nutrition, transportation, and cultural identity. However, recurring droughts, poor veterinary services, and limited awareness about animal welfare have contributed to widespread suffering and declining livestock productivity. SAARO emerged in response to these challenges, recognizing that protecting animals and promoting sustainable agriculture are inseparable pillars of Somalia’s long-term food security and environmental stability.Officially registered under the Ministry of Planning of Southwest State and the Ministry of Livestock, SAARO operates as a trusted and recognized voice for animal welfare and agricultural sustainability in Somalia.
